Montessori education information from a Montessori teacher and Mom. Personal art work and journal entries about my life as a busy Mom of three sons ranging in age from 7 years to 21 years. My hope: To create a place where parenting questions can be answered and conversations as well as ideas shared.

Art Projects for Young Preschoolers
I thought I would share some ART+PLAY projects we did this year.
We drew with water color crayons and then painted over them with watercolor paints.

Georgia on My Mind
A few years ago it became a goal of mine to create Artist Baskets that would share with young children about the lives of some of the artists who have created works of art that they may be exposed to.
A few famous names came to mind right away: Van Goh, Matisse, Picasso, Jackson Pollack, and I realized that they were ALL men. Talented artists who I love and adore but still, ALL men, and there are little girls who are artists! And so I began searching out some more talented artists (who happened to be female) to balance my collection. Easier said than done...
So, to share with you, should you want to enrich your classrooms or homes with Artist Baskets of your own, these are the female artists I added to my list:
- Mary Cassatt
- Georgia O'Keeffe
- Grandma Moses
- Frida Kahlo
- Beatrix Potter
Here is a sample of one of my artist story baskets.

Sorting Seashells by the Seashore
A friend gave me these star fish plates. (Thank you Susan)
They screamed "Summer Camp" to me and so I passed them along to Cornerspring's Summer Camp program, along with the tongs. And so I quickly pulled this little beauty together! Isn't it lovely to look at?
Almost every person is drawn to it the moment they walk into the Practical Life area. But I have to say, it is a bit of a challenge. My Little One was too busy with play ground play to give it a try but for ME, it was a challenge!
Here is why:
Because the shells were cone shaped it made it especially hard to pick them up with tongs.
So, although this work was certainly ascetically pleasing, I felt it was a bit too difficult for a 3-6 class. Perhaps if a different shape of shell was used it would allow even the youngest child to be successful while using it.
It's important to try out the works you create prior to putting them on the shelf.
Another idea: small sponge pieces!

Pine Cone Bird Feeders
The toddlers loved making these! Using small spreaders they spread sun butter (a peanut butter substitute made from sunflower seeds) all over the pine cone they chose. Next they spooned bird seed over the sticky pine cone. We later hung these yummy bird ( or squirrel) snacks from the monkey bars for our playground friends to enjoy.
One More Day
There's just one more day of vacation left. I'm looking forward to going back to school. I've missed my toddler friends and families and most of all the routine of it. I've decided I'm allot like the children I care for. I'm comforted by routine and structure and I love to

Blogs are deceiving
My dear friend Jessie recently reminded me of this when I was complaining about not being able to be as productive as I want to be. She knew, even though I had not said, that I had been comparing myself to the women who author my favorite blogs.
This is something I do when I'm PMS~ing. I read other people's blogs and compare my everything to their everything: my house keeping skills, my organizational skills, my sewing skills, my mothering skills, my artistic abilities, my teaching talent...the list goes on.

July is flying by....
While Montessori Papa is away we have been busy!
As usual I have no camera and therefore lack photos to share (and oh how I wish I did!)
Okay so it's puppet mania around here, it's been raining for WEEKS, out of the bordom was born a wonderful idea. And puppet production began. It started with a special gift.
A family friend offered to give us a most generous gift:
A professional puppet theater!
It's amazing, truly, with its red velvet curtain that pulls open with an unseen string to its hand painted theater masks that are it's crowning glory.
Our plan: To sew, paint and build our own puppets for plays that Middle Man has written over the past dreary rainy weeks. I'm working on the back drops etc. and Little One is mastering his clapping skills to lead an audience of children at the end of August. Locally a new playground is being constructed, it is our hope that our puppets and stories will be finished and ready to be performed the weekend the playground is ready. We want share what we've worked on all summer with other children, and to provide a FREE and fun event for families.

Missing Montessori Papa....
I can't remember exactly when this photo was taken but as I have missed placed (I refuse to say LOST) my camera, and so I have no recent photos of my amazing husband. Also given the fact he's been away for almost a month...finishing his Montessori training.
BUT tomorrow he returns and I am so happy!
You see, I haven't had much time to do much of anything beside look after small people and clean up after them these many weeks he's been away.

Toddler: Dressing Story
Dressing for Winter - (Flannel Story)
This is how we dress on a cold Winter's day.
We put on our snowsuits to go out to play.
Then we put on our boots for walking in the snow.
Next, our hats and our mittens.
'Cause the wind begins to blow.
And now we're all ready to go out and play.
We'll stay nice and warm on this cold Winter day.
CINNAMON DOUGH
1 tablespoon all spice
1 tablespoon nutmeg
¾ cup cinnamon
2 tablespoons ground cloves
1 cup applesauce
Mix ingredients in a large bowl. To use, roll out dough and cut with cookie cutters. Poke a hole at the top of each shape. Place shapes on a baking sheet covered with waxed paper. Air dry for several days, turning often.

Live from Boston
Well, we arrived Tuesday evening and have been enjoying ourselves ever since. This year's national AMS conference is well attended and in a great location! Boston Massachusetts a city full of history and brick. :)
Growing up on Cape Cod, I frequented Bean Town often with my family, occasionally with friends and for school field trips. When I was a girl, Boston meant visits to the Fine Art museum, swan boats and riding the T. As a teenager Boston meant: Fenway Park, Quincy Market and riding the T.
My most memorable visit to Boston, was late summer the week before school started my sophomore year. My best friend and I visited the city with her family. When we got to Quincy market her father gave her $300. to shop for school clothes. We were 15 years old and giddy with excitement about spending my hard earned money (which I think was a total of $155)and her Dad's gift of $300.
You see for me, I had been working for the summer as a library 'page' and because I had always desired being a writer one day, I was thrilled to re-shelve books and search for obscure local historic information for the occasional patron interested in historic homes.
Anyway, with the money burning a hole in our pockets; we headed to the closest Espree store and began trying on outfit after outfit like we were in a scene with Sarah Jessica Parker in "Girl's just Want to Have Fun". It was so much fun. Well, about halfway through our fashion show in the dressing room of Benneton, my friend spies "THE" perfect leather jacket. She wants it more than anything she has ever wanted in her life...she told me. So we visit the leather store just to "try it on" but it fits so nice and she does look wicked cool. She has a plan. The price of the jacket: $250. including tax. She will buy the jacket put it in the bottom of the bag and then cover it with a few cheap purchases and no one (including her parents) will ever find out.
What is it they say about best layed plans....
So the plan worked......until we arrived home (about an hour south of the city) and her parents asked to see the rest of the purchases she had made with the $300 she had been given?
Now as an adult, I long to visit this city without an agenda. There are so many places to go, things to see and do..

Some of my favorite places to visit and why:
Maine Adventure Mom ~ this talented writer is witty and also local (which I LOVE!). But what I really like is her genuine perspective and informative posts. I almost always learn something when I visit this blog; and of course I always smile :)
The Work Plan ~ this busy mom and Montessori teacher recently purchased my reading books from zodiworks. Then on her blog she posted about them! What a kind thing for her to do.

Baby Shower for Robyn
Yesterday we celebrated my friend Robyn's pregnancy and soon to arrive baby Colin. The theme was owls because the Mama to be likes them and the baby's nursery is decorated with them.
Dinos ROAR!
We are back from the holiday break and ready to ROAR! Today was an amazing day at Helping Hands. Dinosaurs roamed the classroom, filled the shelves and a few even ate snack with us! By far the most popular activity was: Digging for Dino Bones, (a $1.69 toy I picked up at Christmas Tree shop in NH). Luckily I bought more than one dinosaur fossil, so the fun can continue on throughout the week. :)
On the shelves this week:
size and shape sorting works,
mystery number
a home made work bench with REAL tools (check next post for details)
a meditation space with a nifty battery operated fountain! (gotta LOVE Christmas Tree Shop!)
Junior Paleontologist (digging for bones) work
magnetic dinosaur body puzzle work

Circle Round
He's HOW old? I can't believe he's 13 today. But he is. Middle Man turns 13 today! Some day his name will be in lights...get ready world here he comes.
When he was born my world turned upside down. An emergency c-section, 11 days in ICU, liver jaundice, possible skull fusion, traumatic birth. But he made it through, we made it through. And we learned how strong we all were as a family.
Later when he was three years old he taught me another lesson, time is precious. He was stung by a bee and my whole world was turned upside down. Since then we've survived 10 bee seasons with an epipen case in his backpack and he's never gotten stung again.
When he was five we learned he had a blood clot disorder. I thought at the time that I could write a Charles Dickens like novel based on my fives years with him. He was/is so dramatic and let me tell you fellow moms, he has been my most challenging child. Not because of his medical conditions but because of who he is. He's intense. He's dramatic and creative. He's a deep feeling boy who takes photos and draws pictures, he can read a 300 page book in a DAY. He never stops questioning or learning he's high and he's low.
Middle Man has been my greatest teacher. I have learned so much being his mom. In honor of his 13th birthday here's my short list:
I've learned.....

I've learned.....
- that time does stand still on occasion
- that it's better to tell a child, "Everything will be alright" rather than to validate their feelings of fear, during a time of extreme medical crisis....even when you don't really know if it will be.
- anyone, any age can be an artist.

I debated sharing this but I have a toothache and my heart aches so I thought, why not? Sometimes juggling everything I juggle is next to impossible. Sure, I've always been an overachiever, so you'd think I'd be really great at it by now but, nope. I'm human and flawed and some times no matter how hard I try, one of the balls, drop.
